A Trio of Top Senior Girls’ Athletes

There were many top South Jersey high school athletes during the 2013-2014 scholastic year. Here is a look at three of the top girls’ sports senior athletes (listed in alphabetical order).

Marie McCool, Moorestown. She just completed one of the top lacrosse careers in Moorestown history, which is saying something, since Moorestown is among the top programs in the country. This past season, McCool had 85 goals and added 44 assists as the Quakers went 26-0, the third straight undefeated season. In her final game, McCool scored four goals as the Quakers beat Summit, 8-6 in the Tournament of Champions final. It was the Quakers 77th consecutive win. Moorestown was named the No. 1 public school in the country by laxpower.com.

McCool competed in the Under Armour All-American Lacrosse Classic over the weekend at Towson University. She was also named New Jersey’s Player of the Year by the Newark Star Ledger for the second consecutive year. During her career, she totaled 272 goals and 94 assists. She has earned a scholarship to the University of North Carolina.

Courtney Norton, Lenape. Norton was named The Philadelphia Inquirer’s senior girls’ athlete of the year after leading the Indians to major championships in two sports. She was a three-year starter in soccer for a Lenape team that won the South Jersey Group 4 championship each season. Lenape also was a state champion her sophomore year. During all three seasons, Lenape also won the South Jersey Coaches Tournament, consisting of the best teams in the area and the Indians were the consensus No. 1 team in South Jersey all three years.

Norton was an all-South Jersey defender. She not only fortified Lenape’s back line, but frequently helped start the offense. In lacrosse, she was a midfielder, who earned all-South Jersey honors for her all-around game. She had 21 goals, but she was among the top players at winning draws. She won 87 draw controls and also collected 134 ground balls. Lenape won the state Group 4 championship. Norton had chances to play college lacrosse, but she has decided to concentrate on soccer, and has earned a scholarship from Rutgers, competing for the Scarlet Knights as they begin play this fall in the Big 10 Conference.

Torie Robinson, Winslow Township. She was the dominant performer on one of the state’s best teams. Robinson, who has earned a track scholarship to Clemson, ended her career in style. She not only won the 100 meters at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions, but her time of 11.73 seconds was the fastest in the state this season. It was her second MOC title, having won the 400 meters the previous year.

As a senior, she helped Winslow Township win the state Group 3 title by a convincing margin. At the state meet, she won three individual state titles, in the 100 and 200 meters and 400 hurdles. She also won all three events at the South Jersey Group 3 championships while also placing second to teammate Cide’a Woods in the 100 hurdles.
